Respiratory Therapy Career Pathway

Build What’s Next in Respiratory Care
Your respiratory therapy career can start before graduation and continue well beyond it. At Emory Healthcare, our Respiratory Therapy Career Pathway gives students, new graduates and early-career respiratory therapists opportunities to learn, gain hands-on experience and explore different areas of inpatient respiratory care.

Through internship, residency and fellowship opportunities, you can build your skills alongside experienced respiratory therapy professionals while discovering where you want your career to go.

Find Your Place in the Pathway

Respiratory Therapy Internship

Start Building Your Experience While You’re Still in School
The internship gives respiratory therapy students an opportunity to begin gaining experience at Emory Healthcare before graduation.

Interns typically work two to three shifts per month while completing their respiratory therapy education. From there, students may have the opportunity to progress into a Respiratory Care Associate role as they continue toward graduation and residency.

Who It’s For:
Students enrolled in two-year or four-year respiratory therapy degree programs.

Respiratory Therapy Residency

Build Your Skills Through Guided Clinical Experience
The Respiratory Therapy Residency is designed to help new and early-career respiratory therapists build confidence and experience in the inpatient hospital setting.

Residents learn with the support of preceptors working under the advisement of clinical educators. Rather than working with only one mentor, residents rotate through preceptor groups and gain experience with different respiratory care modalities.

During the first three months, residents work with one preceptor group while developing experience in specific modalities. Throughout the remainder of the residency, they rotate to additional areas and preceptor groups.

Experiences may include:

  • Intensive care
  • ECMO
  • NICU
  • Acute care
Candidates with less than 12 months of respiratory therapy experience may be eligible to enter the pathway as a Resident Practitioner 2, allowing their previous clinical experience to be recognized.

Respiratory Therapy Fellowship

Explore Your Specialty
After completing the full rotation year, fellowship participants can pursue a specialty focus based on their interests and available opportunities.
